When you live with a neurological condition, you can sometimes finish a task and wonder:
“Why am I so exhausted? I hardly did anything.”
You may have made breakfast.
Had a shower.
Gone to the shops.
Prepared lunch.
Attended an appointment.
Spent an hour talking to someone.
None of these activities necessarily look like exercise.
Yet by the end of the day, your energy can feel completely depleted.
This can be frustrating because other people may only see what you did, not the amount of effort your body and brain had to put into doing it.
Neurological conditions can make ordinary activities more demanding.
And sometimes the biggest energy drain isn’t the activity itself.
It is everything around the activity.
Getting ready.
Moving between tasks.
Concentrating.
Maintaining balance.
Making decisions.
Recovering afterwards.
This is why understanding your personal energy costs can be more useful than simply counting how many activities you completed.
β 1. The Activity Isn’t Always the Whole Story
Imagine going to the supermarket.
Someone might think:
“You only went shopping for 30 minutes.”
But your body experienced much more than 30 minutes.
You had to:
β’ Get dressed
β’ Prepare to leave
β’ Walk or use your mobility aid
β’ Navigate the car park
β’ Move around the shop
β’ Make decisions
β’ Carry or manage your items
β’ Return home
β’ Put everything away
And then recover.
The shopping itself was only one part of the total workload.
This is why two activities that take the same amount of time can have completely different energy costs.
β 2. Preparation Has a Cost
One of the hidden energy costs of daily life is preparation.
Before an activity even begins, you may already be using energy.
Getting ready for a shower.
Preparing for an appointment.
Packing a bag.
Finding your medication.
Getting dressed.
Preparing equipment.
Planning how you’re going to get somewhere.
This matters because you may start an activity thinking:
“I’ve got plenty of energy.”
when in reality, some of that energy has already been spent.
β 3. Transitions Can Be Surprisingly Expensive
Another overlooked part of daily life is moving from one activity to another.
Breakfast β shower.
Shower β getting dressed.
Work β lunch.
Lunch β errands.
Errands β home.
Each transition requires a change of attention, movement and sometimes physical preparation.
If your neurological condition affects balance, coordination or movement, transitions can require even more concentration.
Instead of thinking only about:
“How difficult is this activity?”
consider:
“How many times do I have to switch gears today?”
β 4. Mental Effort Counts Too
Energy isn’t only physical.
Concentration uses energy.
Imagine trying to walk while constantly thinking about:
Where am I putting my feet?
Is that surface safe?
Where is the chair?
Am I going too fast?
Do I need my rollator?
Can I turn here?
For someone with neurological symptoms, movement that looks automatic to another person may require conscious attention.
That mental workload can be exhausting.
And it can explain why a relatively short activity leaves you drained.
β 5. Socialising Can Be Work Too
Something else we don’t always recognise is the energy cost of social interaction.
A conversation may involve:
β’ Listening carefully
β’ Processing information
β’ Finding words
β’ Managing background noise
β’ Watching facial expressions
β’ Controlling your own responses
β’ Maintaining attention
If speech, hearing, cognition or fatigue are affected by your condition, social situations may require considerably more effort than other people realise.
That doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy them.
You can enjoy something and still find it tiring.
β 6. The Recovery Period Is Part of the Activity
This is one of the most important ideas in this article.
If an activity takes 30 minutes but leaves you needing an hour to recover, the activity didn’t really cost 30 minutes of your day.
Its total cost was much greater.
This is why recovery needs to be included when planning.
Instead of:
Activity β next activity
you may need:
Activity β recovery β next activity
That isn’t wasted time.
It’s part of managing the activity.
β 7. “I Can Do It” Doesn’t Always Mean “I Should Do It Now”
One of the hardest lessons can be accepting that being capable of doing something doesn’t necessarily mean it is the right time to do it.
You might be able to clean the whole house.
But what happens afterwards?
You might be able to go shopping and then attend an appointment.
But what happens the following day?
You might be physically capable of completing an activity, but the recovery cost may make the decision unhelpful.
The question becomes:
“What will this cost me afterwards?”
β 8. Learn Your Personal Energy Price
Different people have different energy costs.
For you, perhaps:
A shower = moderate effort.
Shopping = high effort.
Bowls = moderate effort.
A social gathering = high mental effort.
Reading = low physical effort but moderate concentration.
Another person may have completely different results.
There is no universal energy chart.
The useful information is your own pattern.
β 9. Think in Terms of Energy Budgets
Imagine starting each day with an energy budget.
You don’t need to know the exact number.
Just think:
High-energy activities
Medium-energy activities
Low-energy activities
If you spend the entire morning on high-energy activities, you may have very little left for the afternoon.
But if you alternate them, the day may become much more manageable.
For example:
High: shopping
Low: reading
Medium: preparing lunch
Low: sitting outside
High: appointment
This is very different from scheduling three demanding activities back-to-back.
β 10. Grouping Tasks Can Sometimes Help
It may seem more efficient to spread errands across several days.
But sometimes repeated preparation and transitions cost more than doing related tasks together.
For example, if you have to leave the house three times for three small errands, that may require more total energy than completing them during one carefully planned outing.
But this isn’t a rule.
If one outing leaves you exhausted for the rest of the day, splitting activities may be better.
The important thing is to look at total energy cost, not simply time efficiency.
β 11. Make the Task Cheaper
Another approach is to ask:
“How can I reduce the energy cost of this task?”
Perhaps you can:
β’ Sit instead of stand
β’ Use equipment
β’ Prepare things in advance
β’ Keep frequently used items nearby
β’ Break a task into stages
β’ Reduce unnecessary walking
β’ Choose a quieter time
β’ Ask someone to handle the most demanding part
The goal isn’t always to do less.
Sometimes it’s to make the same activity cheaper.
β 12. Stop Measuring Success by How Much You Did
This may be one of the biggest mindset changes.
A successful day isn’t necessarily the day when you accomplish the most.
It may be the day when you:
Did what mattered
Used your energy wisely
Avoided unnecessary exhaustion
Had enough left for something you enjoy
That is still productivity.
In fact, it may be a much smarter form of productivity.

Living with a neurological condition can change the energy cost of ordinary life.
The task may look small.
But the preparation, movement, concentration, transitions and recovery can make its real cost much greater.
So instead of asking only:
“Can I do this?”
try asking:
“What will this cost me?”
And then:
“Is there a way to make it cheaper?”
Sometimes the answer is sitting down.
Sometimes it’s using equipment.
Sometimes it’s doing less.
Sometimes it’s planning recovery.
And sometimes it’s deciding that today isn’t the right day.
You aren’t failing because something costs you more energy than it used to.
You’re learning the new economics of your body.
And once you understand those costs, you can start spending your energy where it matters most.
